Democratic U.S. Senators Raise Alarm Over Trump Administration Efforts to Restrict Mifepristone

U.S. Senators Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine, a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, (both D-VA) joined Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) and all of their Democratic Senate colleagues in sending a letter to U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Marty Makary expressing alarm over the Trump Administration’s plans to reexamine the safety and effectiveness of mifepristone. Since 2000, mifepristone has been approved by the FDA as a safe and effective medication for abortion care and miscarriage management. The Administration’s basis for this review comes from a non-peer-reviewed and unsubstantiated “report” published by the Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC), a think tank known for its anti-abortion views.
