While the stated objective of the legislation is the protection of children and traditional values, it may inadvertently restrict access to critical public health information and services, affecting the country’s efforts to end AIDS by 2030.

In June, Dr. Maingi became chair of the AMA LGBTQ+ Section—the newest section at the AMA, created just last year—which addresses issues of interest to LGBTQ+ medical students, residents and fellows, physicians, patients and their allies. “We’re living in a very diverse world, with much more acceptance and acknowledgement that health care is for everybody—that there are differences that are unexplored, and we can't pretend everybody has the same set of needs,” said Dr. Maingi, who is a lesbian.

Legislation boosts Maryland’s rating with LGBTQ+ policy tracking think tank

While the 2024 session was a bit more understated on new legislative protections for Maryland’s LGBTQ+ population compared to previous years, a nationwide policy tracker reports that the state is creating a more LGBTQ+ friendly state based off recent legislation. The Movement Advancement Project (MAP) follows the ever-changing policy landscape across the United States and how it affects the nation’s LGBTQ+ population. The independent, nonprofit think tank regularly updates a policy map to indicate which states the group deems safer for LGBTQ+ individuals and which have more hostile policies.
