Attorney general seeks stay on lawsuit challenging abortion access

"Attorney General Raúl Torrez has asked the state supreme court to stay a lawsuit filed by the city of Eunice, which challenges the recently-passed House Bill 7 prohibiting local municipalities from restricting an individual's access to reproductive healthcare. Eunice, a small city in the east of the state, is suing to overturn the new law, in the latest in an escalating battle over local ordinances restricting access to abortion, which remains legal in New Mexico. Post-Roe abortion bans force pregnant people with life-threatening complications to travel

"There are no abortion bans yet that criminalize the pregnant person. Instead, criminal penalties are focused on medical providers or others who help someone obtain an abortion. House Republicans punt on national abortion ban amid fears of 2024 backlash

"House Republicans are abandoning a years-long push by their party to pass a federal abortion ban and are exploring other ways to advance their anti-abortion agenda – a remarkable shift that underscores how the GOP is wrestling with an issue that has become a political landmine for their party. In interviews with dozens of Republicans, the vast majority – even among the staunchest opponents of abortion– rejected the idea of Congress pursuing a national ban and said leadership has no plans on the horizon for it to be a centerpiece of their agenda, despite passing federal restrictions on the procedure in previous…
