Miscarrying patient was passed around ‘like a hot potato’ due to Idaho abortion ban, doctor testifies

“A woman experiencing dangerous bleeding was not admitted by doctors at an until her fourth emergency room visit in one week, due to fear and confusion over the state's abortion ban, an Idaho doctor said in testimony on Tuesday. The "heavily bleeding" patient was told the pregnancy would not survive, but she had not been counseled on abortion, Dr. Julie Lyons, a family physician in Idaho and plaintiff in a lawsuit over the state's abortion bans, said on the stand….”

Georgia axes maternal health panel after leak about abortion deaths

“Georgia officials have dissolved a committee responsible for investigating deaths of pregnant women in the state, after one or more members leaked confidential information about deaths linked to the state's strict abortion laws.  In a letter sent to members of the Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC), Georgia health commissioner Kathleen Toomey said an investigation failed to identify those responsible for the leak, so all current members would be removed….”

Alabama unlikely to revisit abortion ban despite success of abortion rights initiatives

A 2018 “Sanctity of Life” amendment could make it difficult to simply add exceptions to the law. When the Alabama Legislature approved a near-total abortion ban in 2019, some Republican members of the Legislature downplayed the impact of the legislation, saying it was meant as a challenge to Roe v. Wade and that the state would revisit the issue if Roe fell, possibly in a “heartbeat” bill that would ban the procedure at about six weeks after conception.

Texas Lawmakers Push for New Exceptions to State’s Strict Abortion Ban After the Deaths of Two Women

“Weeks after ProPublica reported on the deaths of two pregnant women whose miscarriages went untreated in Texas, state lawmakers have filed bills that would create new exceptions to the state’s strict abortion laws, broadening doctors’ ability to intervene when their patients face health risks. The legislation comes after the lawmaker who wrote one of Texas’ recent abortion bans wrote an op-ed in the Houston Chronicledefending the current exceptions as “plenty clear.”…”

Judge’s ruling temporarily frees Montana abortion clinics from new licensing requirements

Abortion clinics in Montana won’t be subject to new licensing requirements — ones their lawyers said could shut them down — at least for the time being. Last week, a Lewis and Clark County District Court judge said the licensing requirements imposed by House Bill 937 from the 2023 Montana Legislature are likely to violate patients’ rights to equal protection.

Virginia Democrats advance efforts to protect abortion, voting rights, marriage equality

“Democrats who control both chambers of the Virginia legislature are hoping to make good on promises made on the campaign trail, including becoming the first Southern state to expand constitutional protections for abortion access. ‘Huge surge’ in U.S. abortion pill demand after Trump’s election win

"Within hours of Donald Trump’s presidential victory, Americans began looking to stockpile reproductive health medications, including emergency contraception and abortion pills, amid widespread fears that his administration could restrict access to these essential resources. The abortion pill mifepristone — sold as Mifegymiso in Canada and Mifeprex in the U.S. — has been flying off the shelves, with online retailers reporting a surge in demand as people take proactive steps to safeguard their reproductive autonomy, explained Elisa Wells, co-founder of Plan C, a U.S. public health initiative that helps facilitate medication abortion. “Prior to the election results coming out, earlier this month, we had 4,500 visitors per…

Abortion-rights ballot measures pass in 7 states, fail in 3 others

"Constitutional amendments to protect or expand abortion rights passed in seven of the 10 states where they appeared on the ballot Tuesday, NBC News projects. Voters in Arizona and Missouri approved ballot initiatives that will effectively protect abortion rights until fetal viability and undo existing abortion laws on the books. But voters in Florida, Nebraska and South Dakota rejected proposed amendments that would have done the same — becoming the first pro-abortion-rights ballot measures to fail since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022. Meanwhile, voters in Maryland, Montana, Nevada and New York (where abortion is already legal through fetal viability) and in Colorado (where there are…
