Questions remain about the Minnesota rampage. Anti-abortion extremism may shed light

"Investigators are still examining possible motives for the killing of a Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband, and the shooting of another legislator and his wife. In a press conference on Monday, Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson described the rampage as a "rare" political assassination. Much of the public discourse has focused on whether the suspect, Vance Luther Boelter, is from the political right or the political left. But people close to Boelter have said he did not discuss politics. Instead, some scholars who focus on the far right and anti-abortion violence say it may be more insightful to examine Boelter's religious background and views…

Nevada U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen Joins Senate Democrats Push to Protect IVF Access for Families Nationwide

This week, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) joined Senate Democratic colleagues in introducing the Protect IVF Act, legislation that would establish a nationwide right to access in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and protect families, providers, and insurers from state-level restrictions or interference. The bill comes in response to increasing attacks on reproductive freedom following the repeal of Roe v. Wade, including an Alabama Supreme Court ruling that effectively halted IVF services in the state last year. This legislation would ensure that no American is denied the ability to build a family due to extreme and politically motivated laws.

US states urge Food and Drug Administration to expand abortion pill accessibility

"The attorneys general of New York, California, Massachusetts, and New Jersey on Thursday asked the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to remove some of the restrictions on access to mifepristone, the so-called “abortion pill.” The four states have requested that the FDA remove the mifepristone risk evaluation and mitigation strategies (REMS) program, “including but not limited to the Prescriber Certification, Pharmacy Certification, and Patient Agreement form.” The states have dubbed these requirements “unnecessary, duplicative, and burdensome.”  The FDA approved mifepristone (brand name “Mifeprex”) more than 20 years ago based on a comprehensive review of scientific evidence. As of 2016, mifepristone has been deemed…

Pennsylvania senators push for abortion shield law to create haven from states with bans

"A pair of Pennsylvania lawmakers are looking to pass a so-called shield law that would offer legal protections for out-of-state women seeking abortions in the commonwealth and for the doctors who perform the procedure. “While we cannot prevent other states from criminalizing abortion, we can protect individuals seeking and providing reproductive health services in the Commonwealth,” Sens. Amanda Cappelletti, of Montgomery County, and Judith Schwank, of Berks County, wrote in a memo June 5. “We can take a stance against the use of our criminal justice system from assisting in those prosecutions.”..."

Amid a constantly changing reproductive landscape, one West Virginia prosecutor is warning people who have miscarriages in his state that they could get in trouble with the law. Raleigh County Prosecuting Attorney Tom Truman says that although he personally wouldn’t prosecute someone for a miscarriage, he made the suggestion out of an abundance of caution after hearing from other prosecutors.

Texas hospital that discharged woman with doomed pregnancy broke the law, inquiry finds

"A Texas hospital that repeatedly sent a woman who was bleeding and in pain home without ending her nonviable, life-threatening pregnancy violated the law, according to a newly released federal investigation. The government’s findings, which have not been previously reported, were a small victory for 36-year-old Kyleigh Thurman, who ultimately lost part of her reproductive system after being discharged after receiving no help from her hometown emergency room for her dangerous ectopic pregnancy. But a new policy the Trump administration announced Tuesday has thrown into doubt the federal government’s stance on hospitals' denying women emergency abortions, even when they are…

Brennan: Women bear cost of bad healthcare policy

A woman’s death from a preventable heart attack isn’t just a misunderstanding of cardiovascular biology — it’s a failure of policy. And when her doctor misdiagnoses her autoimmune flare as stress, or when a hot flash relief drug never reaches pharmacy shelves because it’s deemed financially unviable — these aren’t mere unfortunate accidents. They’re the direct result of systemic underinvestment, outdated assumptions, and misaligned incentives in U.S. healthcare policy.
